What Does EPA Mean in Football?
EPA stands for Expected Points Added and measures the change in expected scoring value created by a play.
EPA = Expected Points After the Play − Expected Points Before the Play
Positive EPA means the play improved the offense's expected scoring outcome. Negative EPA means the play reduced it. A play near the goal line, on third down, or in difficult field position can therefore carry different value than the same number of yards gained in another situation.
